Take your ceramic practice to the next level with specialized Intensives, guided by talented ceramic artists from our studio and broader community.

Intensives include:

  • 3 hours of weekly instruction (during scheduled class time)
  • Glazes, slips, underglazes, and firings 
  • A small studio shelf
  • 3 weekly open studio opportunities (schedule posted)

Each intensive offers a unique focus and tailored materials. Be sure to check the specific section for details on what’s included and what to expect from your chosen session. Intensives are exclusively available for students aged 18 and older.

UPCOMING SPRING/SUMMER 2025 INTENSIVES:

FORM + FUNCTION : SESSION I

THROWN TEAPOTS

Instructor: Drew Davis

Dates: May 17 - June 7 (4 weeks)

Time: Saturday Mornings 10:30am-1:30pm

Price: $180

Description: In this 4 week intensive, taught by Pewabic Kiln Technician, Drew Davis, intermediate students will learn the fundamentals and fine details of wheel-throwing and constructing their own functional teapot. The teapot pictured left was handcrafted by the instructor, Drew Davis.

  • This class does not cover beginner basics
  • Reserved for intermediate to advanced wheel-throwing students
  • Also includes: your first 25lbs of clay

Who Should Register?

This intensive is reserved for intermediate to advanced wheel-throwers who can center clay, pull walls, trim, and glaze successfully.

FORM + FUNCTION: INTENSIVE SESSION II

THROWING CUPS (3 weeks)

Instructor: Chris King

Dates: June 14 - June 28 (3 weeks)

Time: Saturday Mornings 10:30am-1:30pm

Price: $135

Description: In this 3-week intensive, taught by local artist Chris King, intermediate students will focus on the fundamentals and fine details of throwing their own cups. You will build confidence in handling attachments, creating foot designs, and wheel-throwing stable + functional drinking vessels.

Who should register?

This intensive is designed for students who consider themselves intermediate to advanced and would like to focus on the form and function of a particular throwing technique focused on creating cups.

Glazing: INTENSIVE SESSION III

The Basics

Instructor: Michelle Durham

Dates:  July 8 - July 29 (4 weeks)

Time: Tuesday Evenings from 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Price: $180

Description: Build confidence in cone 6 glazing and achieve better results with your work. This intensive focuses on the essentials and advanced skills of dipping, pouring, brushing, and surface decoration. Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, you’ll refine your techniques and elevate your glazing outcomes.

Important Details

  • This class does not cover work construction or firing
  • Prior ceramic experience and bisqueware are required
  • Also includes: testing of tiles + vessels, a glazing journal, and your first 25lbs of clay

Who Should Register?

This intensive is best suited for students who want to elevate their glazing skills by reviewing and refining the fundamentals of proper glaze application. Participants must bring bisque-fired pieces to glaze.

GLAZING : INTENSIVE SESSION IV

UNDERSTANDING ATMOSPHERIC FIRINGS

Instructor: Lauren McCoy

Dates: August 5 - August 26 (4 weeks)

Time: Tuesday Evenings from 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Price: $180

Description: During this intensive led by Pewabic Onsite Education Manager Lauren McCoy, students will build confidence in cone 10 atmospheric firings and learn essential information to better understand Pewabic Education’s available atmospheric firings. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience, participants will explore cone 10 Reduction, cone 10 Soda, and 05 Western Raku. Please note, this class will focus exclusively on glazing and firings and does not cover the construction of work. Prior ceramic knowledge and bisque-ware are required.
