The Bud Vase has a bulbous shape, mimicking the roundness of a flower bud, with slip added to the sides by hand to create a petal-like appearance. From the round bottom emerges an organic tall opening at the top to keep your flowers straight up.

All of our Classic Vases are individually handcrafted by Pewabic artisans, continuing our long tradition of wheel-thrown, stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces. Because each piece is made by hand, some variation in height, width, and form is expected.

In the early days of Pewabic, founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton sketched shapes for her vessel thrower, Joseph Heerich, to throw on the wheel. Stratton would then apply slip or other decorative applications to the surface, much like the Classic Vase finish.

Winterberry Glaze

Red is a notoriously difficult color to achieve in ceramics. Creating our dramatic Winterberry glaze  consistently requires meticulous effort, culminating in the hottest firing we do at Pewabic. The oxygen in the kiln is reduced to capture this rich, red hue. In certain places, the oxygen lingers a little longer to produce flashes of milky white, adding to Winterberry’s appeal and uniqueness. 

Due to the extra effort required to achieve this glossy red, Winterberry is only offered seasonally.
