University of Michigan Seal Tile
This tile is made in cooperation with the University of Michigan and celebrates the long history of collaboration between Pewabic and U-M. The university's seal is embossed into the tile and the two-tone glazing process showcases the design.
Pewabic co-founder, Mary Chase Perry Stratton assisted in founding the art program at the University of Michigan by applying for a large grant that would support the addition of art classes into their existing architecture program. She traveled to the college regularly, as she was officially listed as a lecturer in the art department. When the college decided to make the art program its own department, Stratton assisted with placing professors in the program. In 1930, Stratton received an honorary Master of Arts degree from U-M.
