The center of this 4 inch by 4 inch Aries tile features an alert ram with its legs positioned as if it is prancing. The ram's head is turned backwards over its shoulder. The border around the square tile encircles the beast and each of the four corners contains the Aries sign. The tile rests on a deep blue velvet fabric with gold stars speckled across its surface.
The Aries tile lies with the other two iridescent Pewabic Zodiac tiles on rich, velvety fabric the color of the night sky. The Taurus tile features a sturdy bull with its head bowed and horns lowered. The Gemini tile has twin men standing back to back, they wear flowing clothing and one holds arrows while the other holds a bow.

This Aries Tile features the iconic ram prancing while looking back at its enemies. Each tile in our Zodiac Collection features a low-relief artistic rendering of zodiac symbols hand-sculpted by Pewabic Designer Chris Mayse.

Pewabic co-founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton visited Europe in 1924 to gain inspiration for a large tile installation in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Visiting sacred spaces in Portugal, Spain, and Italy, Mary was inspired by the crossover of astrology and religion in ancient architecture. Throughout her career, she utilized astrological symbols in her installations in religious spaces and as decoration on vessels.

Iridescent Glaze

Many consider the Iridescent glaze to be Pewabic's most important contribution to ceramic art. Through trial, error, and sheer persistence, Mary Chase Perry Stratton developed her first successful Iridescent glaze in 1906. Establishing the formula and stabilizing the firing process took another three years. Today our Iridescent pieces are fired somewhat similarly, though with safer materials. It requires a third firing and a process called fuming, when vegetable oil is injected into the kiln to create the extraordinary one-of-a-kind effects.
