Maker/Mentor 2018
June 8 - July 23, 2018
Each year Pewabic exhibits the outstanding work of its students and staff members. Hailing from varied backgrounds and all over the world Pewabic’s students and staff all learn here. They progress, experiment and grow under the chipped tile roof that is Pewabic’s historic building. They are all makers and mentors. This year marks the 47th annual staff and student exhibition at Pewabic.
2018 JURORS: Andrew L. Camden & Gayle Shaw Camden
As in recent years, the works have been selected through a blind jury process. This year's jurors are Gayle and Andrew Camden, collectors of art, studio craft and ethnographic material, as well as active supporters of Detroit's arts and culture community. Their private collection covers both two and three-dimensional work, created in a wide spectrum of media, and from a variety of cultural contexts.
Gayle, an award-winning residential interior designer, is an Honorary Trustee of the Detroit Institute of Arts and currently serves on the Boards of the Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Public Art Committee of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. She has previously chaired the Modern Decorative Arts Group of the Detroit Institute of Arts and has served on the Boards of the Pewabic Society, Detroit Artists Market and Meadowbrook Art Gallery at Oakland University.
Andrew, a financial advisor, is the Senior Partner of the Kercheval Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors. He is a Trustee of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan; Emeritus Trustee of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Past Chairman of both the Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art and Founders Junior Council of the DIA; Co-Chair of Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Public Art Committee; Chairman Emeritus & Board Member, Museum Trustee Association, and Past Director and Officer of Detroit Artists Market.
The Camdens reside in a 1919 house built by George Caulkins, brother to Pewabic co-founder Horace Caulkins. It features a Pewabic sunroom, fireplace and bathrooms.
