McHenry | Vase Collection
Susan McHenry grew up in upstate New York, subsequently moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan where she discovered her passion for ceramics while working as a writer. She took her first ceramics class in 2002, and the rest is history.
McHenry works out of her home studio (Susan McHenry Ceramics), engrossed in her craft. She is fascinated by the science of clay, and has referred to it as one of her “greatest teachers”.
McHenry in her own words: “...when I face an obstacle in the studio, I can see how much I’ve grown to love solving problems. A life in clay means that I will never be done learning all it has to teach me. The excitement in knowing this allows me to approach the material each day with an openness to the unknown and where it might lead me.”
Susan McHenry teaches at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Her work has been exhibited on the regional and national levels. She is a freelance writer for Ceramics Monthly which featured her studio in their September 2019 issue.
