Pewabic co-founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton assisted in founding the art program at the University of Michigan by applying for a substantial grant to integrate art classes into their existing architecture program. She traveled to the college regularly as a lecturer in the art department.
As the art program grew, Stratton helped to recruit professors who would enrich the department. In recognition of her commitment and influence which were instrumental in the program’s evolution, Mary Chase Perry Stratton was bestowed with an honorary Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1930.
