6x6 Flower Heart | Winterberry
Designed by Pewabic founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton, this Flower Heart Tile features two round blooms sprouting from seemingly intertwined stems to create a lovely heart motif. Although we don’t know much about why and when this tile was created, we can make educated guesses based on our research into Pewabic’s historic tile motifs and installations. Due to its large size and subject matter, the Flower Heart Tile was most likely made for a substantial pre-1920s tile installation, making it part of the earliest days of Pewabic tile-making.
Winterberry Glaze
Red is a notoriously difficult color to achieve in ceramics. Creating our dramatic Winterberry glaze consistently requires meticulous effort, culminating in the hottest firing we do at Pewabic. The oxygen in the kiln is reduced to capture this rich, red hue. In certain places, the oxygen lingers a little longer to produce flashes of milky white, adding to Winterberry’s appeal and uniqueness.
Due to the extra effort required to achieve this glossy red, Winterberry is only offered seasonally.
